Lunar use cases¶
Summary. ADD Rev C lists 163 lunar use cases in Appendix B.2.1 (pp. 110โ117). Each is one of the "Operations that would be executed to produce the desired needs and/or characteristics" (ADD Rev C, p. 17), and each has only an ID and a one-line title. This page reproduces the list in NASA's wording, grouped by the letter in the ID. A last column shows which technology gaps trace to each use case: 61 of the 163 are cited by at least one gap.
How to read the IDs, and what the list leaves out, is on Use cases and functions. The functions are on Lunar functions. The Mars list, numbered independently, is on Mars use cases.
How this page is built¶
- Titles are quoted from the ADD's table "Lunar Use Case", and every page (pp. 110โ117) was checked against the PDF. Where the text layer runs two words together at a line break, the rendered form is used: "long-durations", "long-term" and "environments-related", not "longdurations", "longterm" and "environmentsrelated". The ADD's own spellings are kept as printed, such as "assets(s)" and "at assets in cislunar asset(s)". On pp. 114โ117 the text layer separates IDs from their titles, so those pairings were read from the PDF.
- Order is the ADD's. The list has no sub-headings. The headings below, and the sub-architecture each letter stands for, are the wiki's reading of the ADD's p. 40 table (Sub-architectures).
- Counts are made from the list, by ID.
-
"Tech gaps" column. Derived from the tech-gap spreadsheet's "Architecture Traceability: Use Cases & Functions" field, which pairs a use case with a function (tech gaps spreadsheet). ADD Appendix D prints the same pairs (gaps index). After each gap, the function it pairs with is in brackets:
- "All FN" is the sheet's own entry; Appendix B.2 doesn't say which functions it covers.
- "no function" means the sheet lists the use case alone.
An empty cell means no tech gap cites the use case. It doesn't mean nothing is needed. For the lunar "All FN" entries, the gaps index lists the functions that the lunar decomposition spreadsheet puts under each use case (gaps index).
-
Objectives and functions for each use case come from the lunar objective decomposition spreadsheet:
- the objectives each use case serves, in HLR and FE+: Lunar objectives
- the 17 use cases it gives no function: Lunar objectives
Its "FE+ Use Cases" sheet has the same 163 IDs, order and titles as this page (source page). This page has no objective or function columns; the objective pages carry those links (open question 44).

Numbering (the wiki's check of the IDs above). Within each hundreds group the numbers run without a break, but some hundreds are skipped: there is no UC-L-1xx L, UC-P-2xx L, UC-P-4xx L, UC-M-2xx L, UC-M-5xx L or UC-U-4xx L. No source explains the skips.
The UC-U-8xx L group (blast ejecta, dust, historic sites, reuse, end of life) covers ground that the RT-6 Responsible Use and RT-5 Maintainability and Reuse tenets discuss. The ADD doesn't link them; the pairing is the wiki's.
In the 2024 lunar table¶
NASA's 2024 Lunar Objective Mapping Tables list 162 lunar use cases, all of them with the same IDs as here (the wiki's comparison; 2024 lunar table).
- One is new in 2025: UC-G-101 L, "Ground support on Earth for the launch of large nuclear assets".
- 24 titles differ, ten of them beyond spelling. Mostly these are the duration words: "moderate-duration" became "mid-duration" and "extended-duration" became "long-duration" (UC-H-103 L, UC-H-104 L, UC-X-103 L, UC-X-104 L, UC-U-503 L, UC-U-504 L). UC-T-501 L's "flight systems" became "in-space systems". The other 14 are spelling ("sub-surface", "long term", "non- PSRs").
- Characteristics and needs. In 2024 every use case sits under at least one characteristic or need; the list is on Lunar characteristics and needs.
