Summary. This is the third Moon Base update, according to the encyclopedia entry. It reports the build status of four commercial landers: Blue Moon MK1, Blue Ghost Mission 2, IM-3 and Griffin-1. It also announces three Northrop Grumman technology demonstrations reusing Gateway HALO hardware. It says Phase I "includes more than twenty robotic landings, with each mission designed to incrementally advance system capabilities and validate operational components for those that follow".

Key points

  • Phase I scope (intro): "more than twenty robotic landings". Before astronauts arrive, robotic missions "will deploy critical scientific instruments that characterize the lunar environment, test new technologies, and begin assembling the infrastructure needed for human habitation". The Users Guide gives 21 landings for Phase 1 (p. 4).
  • Blue Moon MK1 Endurance: completed thermal-vacuum testing at NASA Johnson. It "will demonstrate precision landing capabilities, characterize the lunar environment, and tests autonomous systems".
  • Blue Ghost Mission 2: a "dual-spacecraft configuration" (Blue Ghost on the Elytra orbiter). It is "Planned to be the first American landing on the Moon's far side" and carries three NASA payloads.
  • IM-3: Nova-C lander Trinity plus the Altus-1 relay satellite. It delivers "five NASA payloads along with six commercial and one civil payload" to Reiner Gamma.
  • Griffin-1: "built as an infrastructure-class lander", launching late 2026. It "will transport the largest commercial payload ever delivered to the lunar surface". Five NASA payloads ride on the Astrolab FLIP rover.
  • Northrop Grumman ("Northrop Grumman"): three demonstration payloads that build on "power and avionics hardware developed for the Gateway program's HALO", which is "now being repurposed following NASA's shift from an orbital-focused lunar strategy to one centered on surface operations". They will test "survive-the-night systems", "shared surface power infrastructure", and avionics and power capabilities.
