Habitation Systems (H)¶
Summary. "Controlled environments that ensure crew health and performance": life support, thermal control, EVA support, hygiene, food, sleep, exercise, crew health and survival (ADD Rev C, p. 42). Its Rev C elements are Gateway, in deep space, and the Initial Surface Habitat, on the Moon. Eleven technology gaps list it, three named in the Moon Base Users Guide (near-term), and the guide has a Phase 1 habitation group of five functional gaps. Decomposition letter: H.
NASA's description¶
"This sub-architecture comprises controlled environments that ensure crew health and performance over the course of missions. The sub-architecture encompasses many exploration assets and capabilities throughout the architecture, each tailored to suit specific locations and the environments (e.g., deep space, lunar surface, Martian surface).
Habitation functions include environmental control, life support, thermal control, EVA support, crew habitability (e.g., hygiene, nutrition, waste management, sleep, exercise), crew health, and crew survival. Habitation structures can vary drastically and can include modular, connected, pressurized volumes of various materials (e.g., inflatable soft goods, metallic structures, in-situ constructed components).
Habitats scale in size and complexity based on crew size, mission duration, operational environment, and their ability to share functionality through interfaces with other exploration systems (e.g., consumables and power transfer). Other factors like gravity environment, crew tasks, and required crew motions also factor into overall volume." (ADD Rev C, p. 42)
In the segments¶
From ADD Rev C:
- Human Lunar Return surface stays use "crew habitation in an EVA-capable crew lander" (as described in the Foundational Exploration section, p. 29).
- Foundational Exploration. TH-3 and TH-4 build toward crewed Mars missions "through analog missions and technology development" (p. 28). The "Pressurized Mobility" reference mission adds "expanded durations for crew operations on the lunar surface (including enabling additional habitation functions)" (p. 29). The "Extended Surface Habitation Operations" mission uses "a dedicated habitation capability" and could "demonstrate progressively regenerative and self-sustaining environmental control and life support systems, advancing Mars-forward technologies" (p. 29); systems sized for uncrewed periods "may need augmentation" later in the segment (p. 30).
- Sustained Lunar Evolution. Humans "require a significant quantity of resources imported from Earth to survive, along with large amounts of pressurized volume in which to live safely" (p. 35). "habitation" is among the areas for expanded demand signals (p. 36).
- Humans to Mars. The ADD's worked decomposition example is TH-04-M, "Develop in-space and surface habitation systems for crew to live in deep space for extended durations, enabling future missions to Mars" (p. 38).
Elements¶
| Element | Segments | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Gateway ("Gateway Crew-Capable Configuration" in the segment tables) | Human Lunar Return, Foundational Exploration | ADD Rev C, pp. 26, 31 |
| Initial Surface Habitat | Foundational Exploration | ADD Rev C, p. 31 |
See the elements index. Gateway's Power and Propulsion Element has been repurposed since Rev C (Users Guide, p. 2), and so has HALO power and avionics hardware (Gateway). The Initial Surface Habitat houses two crew for "a minimum of 7 and up to 33 days with logistics resupply" (p. 57). The Users Guide names it as an early element "designed … for self-sufficiency" (p. 6; Initial Surface Habitat).
Technology gaps¶
Eleven gaps list this sub-architecture (derived from the tech gaps spreadsheet, Sub-Architectures column). MB = named in the Moon Base Users Guide (near-term).
Moon Base Phase 1¶
The Users Guide's "Habitation systems" group: "Habitable volumes and supporting systems ensuring
the health and performance of astronauts in controlled environments of the Moon Base"
(Users Guide, p. 8). Five functional
gaps (p. 9): three FN-H functions (short and moderate-duration habitable environments, uncrewed
mode), plus FN-X-103 L (crew countermeasures, a Human Systems letter) and
FN-L-301 L (waste management, a Logistics letter). Capability targets
include extended habitation "including hygiene, exercise, and nutrition", extended-duration
medical capabilities, Earth-independent operations and waste management. Full list:
