Mars functions

Summary. ADD Rev C lists 263 Mars functions in Appendix B.2.4 (pp. 135–147), each one of the "Actions that an architecture would perform to complete the desired use case" (ADD Rev C, p. 17). The Mars objective decomposition spreadsheet (December 2025) has the same 263 and puts each under one or more Mars use cases. This page gives every function in NASA's wording, by the letter in the ID, with the use cases it serves and the technology gaps that name it (40). No source yet says which element performs a Mars function: the ADD calls that mapping "forward work" (p. 38).

The use cases are on Mars use cases; how to read an ID is on Use cases and functions. Mars and lunar IDs are numbered independently: FN-T-101 L is "Transport crew from Earth to cislunar space", FN-T-101 M "Staging of crewed Mars mission(s) in Earth vicinity" (ADD pp. 109, 117, 135).

How this page is built

  • Titles are quoted from the ADD's table "Mars Function" (pp. 135–147). The text layer of every page was read, and the rendered PDF checked on pp. 137–139, 141, 145 and 147, where the text layer separates IDs from titles. Where the text layer runs words together at a line break ("Earthbased", "longterm"), the rendered form is used. The ADD's own spellings are kept, such as "continency" (FN-A-109 M), "in space as (demonstration)" (FN-A-113 M, FN-A-114 M), "payloads(s)" and "Martian vicinity" (FN-T-312 M). The spreadsheet's "Functions" sheet has the same 263 IDs, order and titles (source page).
  • Order is the ADD's, including FN-X-201 M and FN-X-202 M printed before FN-X-113 M. Headings are the wiki's reading of the ADD's p. 40 table, as on Mars use cases.
  • "Use cases (Mars sheet)" column. Every use case the spreadsheet's "Functions to Use Cases" sheet puts the function under. Every one of the 263 functions has at least one.
  • "Tech gaps" column. A gap is listed when its "Architecture Traceability: Use Cases & Functions" field names this function; the use case it is paired with is in brackets (tech gaps spreadsheet; ADD Appendix D prints the same pairs). † marks a pair the decomposition doesn't make (the wiki's check). Gaps that pair a use case with "All FN" are not shown here; they are on Mars use cases, and the functions they cover are listed on the gaps index.
  • "(demonstration)". 63 of the 263 titles end with it, 34 of them in robotics (A). No lunar function title has it (the lunar spreadsheet searched). Neither the ADD nor the spreadsheet says what it marks. The objectives glossary defines the verb "Demonstrate" as "Deploy an initial capability" (Objectives); whether the marker uses that sense isn't stated.
  • Counts are the wiki's, made from the lists by ID.

Compared with the lunar list (208 functions, 41 named by a gap), the Mars list has more robotics (39 against 16), C&PNT (27 against 13), habitation (28 against 7), infrastructure (21 against 9) and human-systems (15 against 6) functions, and fewer mobility (12 against 28) and logistics (5 against 9) ones. The wiki's comparison.

The most-used functions (by the number of use cases they serve): FN-T-213 M, "Transport cargo between Earth vicinity and Mars vicinity", serves 23; FN-C-102 M (surface–Earth communications) 11; FN-T-202 M (cargo to the surface) 10; FN-P-401 M (long-duration payload power) and FN-U-702 M (deploy and operate surface payloads) 9 each; FN-T-403 M (cargo from Earth vicinity to Earth's surface) 8; FN-P-303 M and FN-C-201 M 7 each. 180 functions serve one use case only, and 83 serve more than one.

No EVA functions. The Mars list has no M 100 "EVA" functions: nothing like the lunar FN-M-101 L, "Enable crew lunar surface extravehicular activity in sunlit areas and non-PSRs". The Mars suit gap, #0803, traces to UC-M-101 M with "All FN", and the spreadsheet's functions under that use case are utilization ones (FN-U-107 M, FN-U-301 M, FN-U-701 M). The observation is the wiki's; the ADD doesn't comment.

Samples. The sample chain is spelled out for four conditions, unconditioned, refrigerated, frozen and cryogenic: repositioning on the surface (FN-M-502 M to FN-M-505 M), stowing on the surface and in each leg of transit (FN-U-402 M to FN-U-418 M), and conditioning resources on the surface and in transit (FN-U-407 M, -412, -417; FN-T-302 M to FN-T-312 M). The cryogenic chain is what #1201 In-Situ Sample Storage and Processing covers through UC-T-302 M and UC-T-303 M (gaps index).

Planetary protection. FN-U-802 M to FN-U-804 M and FN-G-501 M are the Mars functions that name planetary protection, bioburden or contamination control; FN-H-106 M lists "backwards planetary protection considerations" among hazards. Only FN-G-501 M is named by a gap, #1202. See Planetary protection.

In the 2024 Mars table

NASA's 2024 Mars Objective Mapping Tables list 218 Mars functions, against 263 here (the wiki's comparison, ID by ID; 2024 Mars table).

  • 211 IDs are in both lists. Most have the same titles. Thirteen are reworded: the ground and recovery functions FN-G-101 M, FN-G-102 M, FN-G-201 M and FN-G-202 M, which now read as the lunar ones do; the PNT functions FN-C-201 M to FN-C-205 M ("data" becomes "services", some "coordinated"); FN-T-302 M (now for frozen samples); and FN-U-303 M, FN-U-306 M and FN-U-402 M (the special and non-special split, and "Store" becomes "Stow").
  • 52 are new in 2025. Most are sample conditioning and stowage by temperature (FN-T-305 M to FN-T-312 M, FN-U-403 M to FN-U-418 M), science accommodation and monitoring (FN-U-109 M to FN-U-113 M, FN-U-203 M to FN-U-208 M, FN-U-702 M to FN-U-704 M), sample repositioning (FN-M-502 M to FN-M-505 M) and science data links (FN-C-109 M, FN-C-110 M).
  • Seven 2024 functions are gone: FN-T-301 M, FN-T-303 M, FN-T-304 M, FN-G-204 M, FN-G-205 M, FN-U-102 M and FN-U-401 M.
  • "(demonstration)" dates from 2024. All 63 functions ending "(demonstration)" are in the 2024 list with the same IDs and titles, and none of the 52 new ones has it (counted by search). So the marker belongs to the Revision B batch of Transportation and Habitation, Mars Infrastructure and Operations functions. What it marks is still not stated.
  • Slips such as "continency" (FN-A-109 M) and "in space as (demonstration)" (FN-A-113 M, FN-A-114 M) are already in 2024.
