February 2024 workshop: white-paper briefing, Surface EVA Architectural Drivers

Document: 14-2024-architecture-workshop-white-paper-surface-eva-drivers.pdf, 7 slides, 2,494,195 bytes, from https://www.nasa.gov/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/, fetched 2026-10-01T18:28:04Z (sources/manifest.csv). Title slide: "Surface EVA Architectural Drivers" (slide 1). No presenter or date. Footer: "2024 Moon to Mars Architecture Workshops". Listed on the Architecture Workshops page under "February 2024". Text: sources/text/docs/2024-02-14-2024-architecture-workshop-white-paper-surface-eva-drivers.txt; images in sources/raw/slides/2024-02-14-2024-architecture-workshop-white-paper-surface-eva-drivers/.

Rank and method. A briefing, not the architecture of record (SCHEMA, "Workshop slides"), older than Rev B and Rev C. It briefs a 2023 white paper the wiki doesn't hold, "Surface EVA Architectural Drivers" (Overview and Updates, slide 11), which the ACR25 "Why Moon and Mars?" paper cites (source page). All 7 slides were read in the text layer; the images of the text-poor slides 3, 4, 5 and 7 were viewed, and of slide 2. The title card (slide 1) wasn't. The text has no "Moon Base", "CUI" or "Pre-Decisional" (searched).

Summary. Why EVAs on a planetary surface differ from those in microgravity, and ten "Key Considerations" that will shape the lunar surface architecture, each a picture with a caption and no further text. The slides give the headings, not the paper's argument.

Slides

Slide Title (as printed) Content
1 "Surface EVA Architectural Drivers" Title card
2 "Microgravity to Partial Gravity EVAs" Experience (image: an astronaut on a lander ladder, an LTV behind)
3 "Key Considerations" "Dust (Regolith) Mitigation"; "Partial Gravity"; "Atmospheric Pressure"; "Habitation and Pressurized Volumes" (four photos; image)
4 "Key Considerations" "Commodities and Logistics"; "Ingress and Egress"; "Communications, Lighting, and Navigation" (three photos; image)
5 "Key Considerations" "Enabling Suited Crew Decision Making"; "Site Planning"; "Contingencies and Operations" (three photos; image)
6 "Summary" "Moon to Mars will leverage lessons learned from microgravity EVAs"; "Surface EVAs have significant number of environmental and mission drivers different from microgravity"; "These drivers will influence several facets of the lunar surface architecture"
7 "White Paper" The paper (image)

Experience (slide 2)

"Extensive micro-gravity experience across heritage programs, Shuttle, and the International Space Station (260+ EVAs on the space station alone)"; "Six total Apollo partial-gravity lunar surface missions (14 EVAs totaling ~159 hours)"; "Environmental differences are a critical driver to extension of EVA expertise for Artemis and beyond".

The paper (slide 7)

Thumbnails of five pages and a QR code, read from the image as far as the print allows. The first page is headed "Surface EVA Architectural Drivers", with "2023 Moon to Mars Architecture" down the side and "2023 Moon to Mars Architecture Concept Review" in the footer. The paper's sections are numbered; the legible ones include "1. Introduction", "2. Dust (Regolith) Mitigation", "4. Atmospheric Pressures", "5. Commodities and Logistics", "8. Enabling Suited Crew Decision-Making", "11. Contingencies and Operations" and "12. Conclusions", so the ten considerations appear to be sections 2 to 11 (the wiki's reading). Three figures are captioned "Conceptual Rendering" 1 to 3. No body text is quoted here from the thumbnails.

Where it bears on the architecture

The considerations touch several Rev C subjects; the pairings are the wiki's, by subject, and the slides cite no gap or function: dust (#0801), suits and surface mobility (Mobility Systems, Exploration EVA System), and EVA as a driver of crew size (one of MD-05's findings as briefed in January 2026, at Mars: "Surface EVA is a primary driver for crew size"; Key definition tasks). The home for the deck's content is Mobility Systems.

What changed by Rev C

The wiki's comparison: Rev C's open key definition tasks include an "Exploration EVA Schema" and a "Surface EVA Capability Strategy" (Surface Operations; Key definition tasks), so the subject is still open there. The slides give no figure Rev C changes.

Oddities

As printed: "micro-gravity" (slide 2) beside "Microgravity" (slide 2's title, slide 6); "Atmospheric Pressure" on slide 3 against "Atmospheric Pressures" in the paper's heading, as far as the thumbnail can be read.
